For the first time, Barretts Land Rover attended Agri-Expo 2014 on 5th March at Kent County Showground, Detling. This growing agricultural event is fast becoming a favourite in the farming business calendar. This large event allows a variety of exhibitors to demonstrate their new products and engage with the local business community to promote as well as educate.

Over the years, Land Rover has had a profound effect on the farming and agricultural community and has become synonymous with businesses and individuals, relying on a durable and dependable utility vehicle to achieve limits where others could not. Land Rover began life in 1948, with the Land Rover Series, which later developed into the iconic Defender. These early Land Rovers were a work-horse and an agricultural aid for farmers. Remarkably, Land Rover has claimed that six decades on, two-thirds of these built are still in regular use today!


Land Rover Heritage describes the vehicles as ‘ingeniously designed and engineered for extreme capability and strength. With extremely robust construction and characteristics such as short front and rear overhangs, it drove off the production line ready to take on some of the world’s toughest terrain. Today these qualities are as significant a part of what makes a Land Rover vehicle unique as they were 60 years ago.’

Through the 1950’s and 60’s Land Rover ‘was the product of continuous evolution and refinement with improved stability and a tighter turning circle. It was a period in which Land Rover took the lead in the emerging market for four-wheel drive vehicles.  As a tough, reliable mobility platform, countless organisations came to depend on Land Rover vehicles to get personnel and equipment into the most challenging situations…and then safely out again.  From organisations such as Born Free Foundation to The Royal Geographical Society and Biosphere Expeditions - we enter the second decade of the 21st century with them still relying on Land Rover.’



Land Rover is a proud supporter of farming communities and sustaining farming resources.

Land Rover maintains a partnership with National Farmers Union and also, The Prince’s Countryside Fund to face issues and improve training and education as well as promoting and supporting rural businesses and enterprises.

The Defender has continually been a popular vehicle within the agricultural community and with so many model options and upgrades, there is little else that can rival its versatility and strength. With no or minor modification, the Defender can still handle some of the world’s toughest terrain and still come out fighting. With its strong off-road capabilities and adaptable qualities, we can see why the Defender is a strong character, and for many a necessity on the agricultural scene.

Despite the Defender’s popularity and success, Land Rover has announced that the well-loved Defender will cease production by the end of 2015. However, there is speculation and rumours of a replacement that will complement its predecessor and meet the changing global market.
John Edwards, head of Jaguar Land Rover's new individual products division, said the Defender was ‘loved the world over for its simple, honest and distinctive design’ adding ’we are determined that the new Defender will be true to its heritage’. We look forward to when Jaguar Land Rover unveil a new model joining the Land Rover family.
