Discovery Adventure Challenge

Young Explorer Alex Woodford, 22, crowned Land Rover’s Next Generation Explorer

On Sunday 2nd March, four young adventures competed in a first of its kind, gruelling five-part Discovery Adventure Challenge to celebrate 25 years of Land Rover Discovery. From the breathtakingly beautiful snow covered mountain region of Megève, France, these young intrepid challengers had the encouragement from their mentors, some of the worlds acclaimed explorers and survival experts; Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Hannah White, Kenton Cool and Eric Loizeau.

Each mentor was paired with a challenger; Hannah Wright (21), Cameron Mackay (18), Alex Woodford (22) and Tim Davies (22) who were selected from the British Exploring Society. Each team of challenger and mentor were put through their paces for 24 hours under the harsh winter mountain conditions testing their mental and physical strength.

Each challenge is overseen by seasoned adventurer Ben Saunders, fresh from completing The Scott Expedition and a team of ambassadors who cast their vote for their overall winner.

Their challenges included:

1. Slalom: Two Land Rover Discovery XXVs competed side by side through a slalom course down the slope. Two tense heats, one final.

2. Biathlon: Testing precision and speed. One team member drove a Discovery XXV around a purpose built course, while the other played marksman, shooting a laser gun at a variety of challenging targets.

3. Sled Pull: Physical stamina is tested in this. One member to pull the sled and the other to control the steering.

4. Snow Hole: As night fell, the contestants along with their mentors had two hours to dig a snow hole to sleep in. They will also be tasked with creating a fire from scratch. Points were awarded for the fastest built and warmest hole.

5. Kayak Race Finale: Moving down to Lake Geneva, this final task is an all-out boat race to the finish.

After a long day of blood, sweat and tears the final decision from the ambassadors crowned, Alex Woodford, from Leicestershire as Land Rover’s Next Generation Explorer. Sir Ranulph Fiennes hands down the baton of exploration as Alex is now on a journey with seasoned adventurer Bear Grylls to experience first-hand the survival skills made famous by Bear.

Alex was chosen unanimously by the judges after displaying her strength, technique and courage throughout the challenges.

Sir Ranulp Fiennes commented “Alex exhibited the true spirit of adventure. Throughout the competition she met each challenge head on, yet with a cool, calm and collected demeanour that eventually helped her win the title of Next Generation Explorer. I am extremely excited to see what lies ahead for Alex. With the guidance of Bear and Land Rover I predict she will go on to achieve great things.”

Jaguar Land Rover Global Brand Experience Director Mark Cameron added, "I am delighted to announce Alex as the winner of our first ever Discovery Adventure Challenge.  All of the competitors showed the true spirit of going Above and Beyond, which lies at the heart of the Land Rover brand.  I believe that Alex will go on to join the impressive line-up of Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Ben Saunders, Eric Loizeau, Hannah White, Kenton Cool and Bear Gryllls, who have all achieved incredible feats across the globe."
