Invictus Games Closing Ceremony
JAGUAR LAND ROVER INVICTUS GAMES CLOSING CEREMONY
The Invictus Games presented by Jaguar Land Rover came to a spectacular close on Sunday 14th September. The star-studded finale kicked-off in the afternoon at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The schedule included medallion presentations to all the inspirational participants from all nations and a closing speech from Prince Harry which ended in an embrace with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, who headlined the event. Other star guests included Kaiser Chiefs, Ellie Goulding, Ryan Adams, The Vamps, Rizzle Kicks, James Blunt, Diversity and Military Wives Choir.
Jaguar Land Rover congratulates the 413 inspirational Servicemen and women who have lit up the Invictus Games over the four days of competing. This international sporting event has been championed by Prince Harry and brought global recognition to the importance of sport during rehabilitation.
Jaguar Land Rover presented two special awards to Invictus competitors Joe Townsend and Maurice Manuel.
Townsend lifted The Jaguar Award for Exceptional Performance, having followed up his four gold medals at Wednesday's athletics with silver and bronze in hand cycling on Saturday. Townsend, who has previously cycled 3,000 miles across the USA, was presented with his award by Team Sky cyclist Ian Stannard and Olympic rower Katherine Grainger.
The veteran Royal Marine, who lost both legs above the knee after standing on an anti-tank mine in Afghanistan in 2008, said: "To be selected for this award from over 400 inspiring competitors is very special. The first ever Invictus Games have been an incredible event and this award caps a week I will remember for the rest of my life.
"Winning four gold medals on the first day of competition was incredible. Sport has played a huge role in my recovery and the Invictus Games will hopefully continue to provide a platform for people like me to achieve their goals”.
Denmark's Maurice Manuel was named the Land Rover Unconquerable Soul for going above and beyond, in his commitment to the Games. Captaining and coaching Denmark's wheelchair basketball team to bronze, he also won silver in the javelin, bronze in the Ambulant IT1 200m and bronze in wheelchair rugby. All these were achieved this week, whilst he cared for an un-well family member.
Army veteran Manuel served on six tours of Iraq and Afghanistan, before having his right leg amputated after being injured by an IED in 2010 while working as a combat translator. He described the Land Rover Unconquerable Soul Award, which was presented by Rugby World Cup winner Lawrence Dallagio, as "an honour beyond measure".
He said: "There are so many people I want to thank for this amazing experience, being part of the Invictus Games and for helping me accomplish my goals. Thank you to my family and to all the competitors for inspiring me and pushing me to exceed my own expectations."
Dr Ralf Speth, Chief Executive Officer of Jaguar Land Rover, said: "We are immensely proud to have played our part in these hugely successful Games and would like to congratulate every one of the 413 competitors who have provided such inspiration this week.
The Invictus Games has proved a great success sending a positive message about life beyond disability. Sport is a means to an end. In creating a moment of celebration of the journey of recovery, the event has also brought international attention to that journey. One of rebuilding self-confidence, of rebuilding ambitions, of rebuilding a career, of rebuilding a family and social life. www.invictusgames.org

Invictus Games Opening Ceremony
INVICTUS GAMES OPENING CEREMONY PRESENTED BY JAGUAR LAND ROVER
On the evening of 10th September, London held the opening ceremony of the first ever Invictus Games marking the start of the highly anticipated sporting competition for ‘wounded warriors’ from 13 nations. The event roared into life with a spectacular Red Arrows fly-past among other military appearances and performances.
During the ceremony a heritage Land Rover Series II carried Idris Elba, an actor and singer who famously portrayed Nelson Mandela in the 2013 film ‘Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom’. The Land Rover had previously carried Her Majesty the Queen and the late Queen Mother during the 1970s/80s. This Land Rover icon has been evolving for 65 years, now more commonly known as the Defender has sold over 2 million units since the car first appeared in 1948.
Idris Elba recited ‘Invictus’, the famous 1875 poem by William Ernest Henley that proclaims strength in the face of adversity. The spirit of the poem’s poignant closing lines, ‘I am the captain of my soul; I am the master of my fate’, can be seen in the ‘I AM’ emblem of the Invictus Games which celebrate what these men and women can achieve, post-injury. Later the flag bearers moved in the ‘I AM’ formation that could be seen from aerial views on camera.
Prince Harry was welcomed to the stage via video link from Michelle Obama. Prince Harry welcomed nations, competitors and supporters and commented, “Your stories move, inspire and humble us. You prove that anything is impossible, if you have the will. Welcome to the Games. Welcome to Invictus”
The celebrations closed with the official Invictus anthem penned by Coldplay’s Chris Martin, by Tri-Service Male Singers, Urban Voices Choir and Service Bands.

Galactic Discovery
Are you Ready to Discover? In connection with the launch of The New Discovery Sport, Land Rover has launched a worldwide search to find a group of kindred spirits to embark on the ultimate adventure; a trip to space.
Four friends are set to win this once in a lifetime opportunity with Land Rover’s Galactic Discovery competition. The incredible Virgin Galactic Flight prize was announced through a video launched by Land Rover featuring some of the world’s adventurers and personalities including Sir Richard Branson, Bear Grylls and Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
This is the first time that a competition has been offered for a group of four friends to win a trip to space. The winners will be among the first pioneering travellers to view the earth from space and experience out-of-seat zero gravity.
Phil Popham, Jaguar Land Rover Group Marketing Director, said: "Only Land Rover could offer this incredible opportunity: the chance to win the most spectacular group journey of a lifetime. Our heritage is rooted in adventure, exploration and a desire to go above and beyond, and nothing embodies this spirit of discovery more than a trip to space."
To enter the competition, aspiring astronauts from across the globe are being asked to produce a 30-second video, or a still image that demonstrates their spirit of adventure. Choose three friends to join them on the space adventure and submit via Land Rover’s website.

New Discovery Sport
Land Rover Launches New Discovery Sport
- Land Rover reveals the world's most versatile and capable premium compact SUV
- Bold and progressive design defines all-new Discovery family
- Design leadership and engineering integrity have created the ultimate use of interior space with class-leading versatility and optional 5+2 seating
- Discovery Sport revealed digitally at Spaceport America with news of Galactic Discovery competition to send four winners to space with Virgin Galactic
Land Rover has revealed the new Discovery Sport, the world's most versatile and capable premium compact SUV. The first member of the new Discovery family, Discovery Sport, features 5+2 seating in a footprint no larger than existing 5-seat premium SUVs.
Discovery Sport's progressive new design approach defines the new Discovery family with optimised volume, proportions and stance. Its design leadership combines with engineering integrity to result in a dynamic profile, the ultimate use of interior space and 5+2 seating configurability.
"Our challenge has been to combine premium design with exceptional versatility; the two attributes must work in harmony," said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer. "I'm proud to say we've achieved that; Discovery Sport's dynamic design will resonate on an emotional level with consumers, and this vehicle is more versatile than any other premium compact SUV on the market."
Land Rover digitally revealed the new Discovery Sport at Spaceport America in New Mexico, USA, also launching the Land Rover Galactic Discovery competition. Four friends are set to win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to space with Land Rover's global partner, Virgin Galactic as part of an innovative digital competition at www.landrover.com/gotospace.
This spirit of adventure is reflected in Discovery Sport's interior, which has been designed with customers at its core. It features high-quality materials and a strong vertical centre console graphic to reflect the premium design of the exterior, while the core Discovery value of versatility is evident everywhere. Storage solutions are integrated into the cabin and up to four 12V power points and six USB charging sockets can be specified for all three rows of seating, allowing multiple electronic devices to be charged simultaneously.
A host of innovations have allowed Discovery Sport to introduce the versatility of 5+2 seating into the premium compact SUV class for the first time. An all-new multi-link rear axle not only provides engaging driving dynamics but it also provides ample and flexible cabin space behind the second row.
Coupled with supple long-travel suspension, the innovative rear axle also ensures the Discovery Sport is comfortable, refined and rewarding to drive on-road, while retaining the breadth of all-terrain capability for which Land Rover is world-renowned. In fact, with approach, departure and breakover angles of 25, 31 and 21 degrees respectively, Terrain Response® technology, and the ability to wade to 600mm, Discovery Sport offers class-leading capability in all conditions.
As with every new Land Rover, safety has been a key priority in the development of the new Discovery Sport, resulting in a first-in-class pedestrian airbag, autonomous emergency braking, and a state-of-the-art bodyshell featuring both ultra-high-strength steel and lightweight aluminium.
This represents a fraction of the advanced equipment available in Discovery Sport, which also includes Head-Up Display, an all-new 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and tilt-and-slide row-two seating for maximum interior configurability.
At launch the Discovery Sport will be equipped with a range of four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. Both the all-alloy Si4 2.0-litre petrol engine and the 2.2-litre turbodiesel feature stop-start technology, high-pressure direct injection, low-friction internal components and smart regenerative charging for outstanding performance and economy.
Later in 2015, a highly efficient ED4 turbodiesel engine will join the range with CO2 emissions of just 119g/km*. Both 9-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmissions are available, along with a choice of two- or four-wheel-drive.
"Not only does Discovery Sport mark the introduction of the first new member of our expanding Discovery family, it also brings the versatility of 5+2 seating to the compact premium SUV market," said Phil Popham, Jaguar Land Rover Group Marketing Director. "Discovery Sport's versatility is a key differentiator. It is quite simply the most accomplished vehicle in its segment."
Discovery Sport will be produced at Land Rover's award-winning manufacturing facility at Halewood, Liverpool. It goes on sale in early 2015 alongside the existing seven-seat Land Rover Discovery in over 170 markets worldwide.
